Question:

When You Hand A Cashier A $100 Is She Supposed to Pick It Up And Inspect It?

When you go to a restaurant (or any store) and hand the cashier a $100 bill, is it standard procedure for her to pick it up and inspect it in front of you? They have done that to my friend a couple of times (she has a lot of money) and she gets highly offended.

Usually when I hand them a $100 bill they just run a special pen through it.

  1. She shouldn't be offended it's standard procedure to inspect the money or run the pen through it.  They should be respectful and take it to the cash register and do it but either way you know that they are doing it so i guess it reall y doesn't matter.

  2. Yes it is very normal.  I am a manager at a retail store and our policy is even more strict.  If any of our cashiers get a $20 bill they are supposed to mark it with a counterfeit pen to verify it; and if they receive a $50 or $100 bill they are supposed to call a manager to the front and wait until I or another manager can inspect the bill.  There are way too many counterfeit bills in circulation now days.  Some business might be more lenient on their bill policies then others, but I wouldn't think anything of it if someone inspects a higher bill.  The company is just trying to look out for themselves.

  3. I think thats normal. Money had different marks on it so people can tell if it's counterfeit or not. Usually you have to hold it up to the light. Some places have stamps or markers they use to tell if money is legit but those things can cost a lot of money. I heard that just one of those brown markers (and those are the cheapest ones) is $25. It's best to stop counterfeit money in it's tracks early. It's easier to trace back to the counterfeiter if it's gone through less people.

And tell your uptight friend to chill out...it's not really that big of deal to check hundred dollar bills

  4. The $100.00 bill is the most counterfeited bill in circulation.  It is up to the business as to how they choose to determine if the bill is counterfeit. If you are embarrassed to have them checked, perhaps you should stop using them.  Maybe you are using $100.00's to show off?  Is it a ego boost to you?

In most cases you have to ask for big bills, larger than a $20.00, at the bank.

How would it feel it the business refused to take you $100.00, because it was counterfeit?

  5. yes its normal

sadly because of todays economy 1 can never be too sure of who to trust.

  6. Yes, that is normal.    There are too many counterfiets around.    She should not be offended.   They do it to everyone.    It's may not be her that they are looking at, but maybe the person or bank that she got it from.   You can never be too sure these days.

  7. Yeah...it's really rude for these little minimum wage employees to inspect it in front of you.

  8. Either way . . . some places use the pen, some use visual inspection. Same difference. Places have to do it. And it's "trickling down" to smaller and smaller bills.

Recently I took over $300. in $1. bills to deposit in the bank . . . and they actually ran the pen over every one of them!!!

  9. Your friend should tell the cashier, "It should be fine, this batch came out perfect!"

  10. Yes, we are. I have been a cashier for 8 years, and I have been handed two counterfeit 20 dollar bills while working at my current job. If people will copy a 20, they will definitely copy a 100. Your friend is silly to get offended at someone who is merely doing a security measure as part of her job. And it only raises suspicion when people get offended about these kind of things.

  11. it depends.  usually if they inspect it and use the counterfit pen, then probably someone might have used a fake on them before.  at my working place, someone used a fake 100 dollar bill.  so now we check it with a pen and have a manager actually check it.  u just need to let the customer know politely that its procedure and we do it for all big bills (fifties and such)
