  1. They are reassigned to either another ship or shore duty if they are eligible.

  2. They get transferred to another ship or to shore duty. In my case I was transferred from the ship to a Naval Beach Group. If you have orders to a ship that is to be decommissioned your orders are usually changed. But, it could be that you are needed on board for the ship's movement to its final port location.

  3. the entire crew receives new orders.  they scatter to the seven seas.  if they still have sea duty time left, they will go to another ship.

It takes years to build a ship, and then still more years after it is built before it is ready to  begin service.

if there are at least six months left before a ship is Decomm'd, they wills till send people to it even if they already have a schedule.

  4. they get new orders to whatever's available. it could be shore duty or sea duty. if it's their time to go shore duty that's what happens.

  5. They are assigned to other ships or to shore duty somewhere. New ships are not built very often any more and when they are it takes about two-three years from when they are started until they are ready to be launched and then after launching it takes another six months to get the ship ready to report to the fleet.

  6. In the 1990s my ship was decommissioned and I was able to get an early (3 months) discharge from the Navy. About 30% of the crew will stay with the ship while it is being torn apart by the shipyard. They do such things as tag/lock out electrial/hydraulic systems, assist with security and are able to help the shipyard workers safely remove equipment.

Those that aren't part of this "decom" crew are sent to other ships or schools.

As for the length of time it takes to build a ship, that depends on the money available and size of the ship. Attack submarines can be built in under 2 years, while aircraft carriers take 4 to 5 years.

Just my 2 cents ~ Jeff

  7.   When a ship is decommissioned, some sailors may stay with it for awhile to shut it down.  Others are reassigned to other ships or other duty stations, some are due to be released from service or retire.

Everyone will have a job or a temporary assignment until a permanent job is assigned !

Some of the larger ships take a few years to be built !

They're either put to work shutting the ship down (though mothballing is done at one of the Navy's "boneyards" where old ships are tied up and covered with plastic and cosmoline by specially trained crews).or re-assigned to other duties ashore or on other ships.

"How long does it take to build a ship ??"

Anywhere from a year and a half to three years from the time construction starts, more for something like an aircraft carrier or a new-generation submarine (the Navy seems to be testing out several different designs for fast attack subs in order to balance the needs of the blackshoe Navy against the SEALs and the other stakeholders in littoral warfare (intel and special ops, mainly.  But it takes extra time and money when you build four subs from three different sets of blueprints)..

Back in World War II, the Kaiser shipyards were pushing out a transport ship every day (but a lot of those ships foundered and broke up while sailing through heavy waves until Kaiser went back to the drawing board.and added reinforcement to the Kaiser ships' riveted steel hulls).

  9. i do not know how long it takes to build a ship.but sometimes they go home to there family

  10. Ships company are given new orders to a different ship. My husband was on the Independence when it decommissioned and then cross decked to the Kitty-Hawk-now decommissioned. When the Kennedy decommissioned, a lot of the sailors were given orders to other ships that are also in the same home port. They wish they could be on shore duty while another ship is being built! but it doesn't work that way. If it's an aircraft carrier, it takes about 7 years of construction and then I think about 2 years on sea trials before it is finally commissioned and given a home port.
