I know that it varies depending on what show and station it is, but do they get like a large lump sum fo having to come into the station with only 12 hours notice?

  1. I think most people would be suprised to know how little radio on-air people earn. Especially if you're only a DJ. Most local DJs you hear on-air probably aren't just DJs. They technically have another "main" job at the station (like program director, or work in production or promotions...)  and are allowed/expected to do on-air shifts as well. So, the fill in guy is probably some production guy who's had an air shift dumped on them at the last minute and aren't getting paid anything extra for it. As the other answerer said, if you're strickly a DJ (or board operator, which is the technical term) you are an hourly employee at around $10/hr. The only DJs making decent money are those who have syndicated shows.

  2. Nope, usually the fill ins are the overnight or weekend guys that get paid hourly.  Or alot of big morning/afternoon DJs will have a specific fill in for them only, and they still get an hourly wage but get more than the lowly weekend dude.  When ever i fill in i only get my 10 bucks an hour, same w/ most.  The last minute scheduling comes w/ the job.
