  1. Yes, to check for hernia..

  2. yes

  3. Yes, they check you from the inside too.   The Dr. does this all the time, it is not anything unusual.

Just try to relax, it won't take long.

  4. I just recently had a physical examination myself, and was reading through Yahoo! Answers to try and find exactly what it was all about. I did come across often the advice that the GP grasps ones testicles and asks the examinee to cough. With all this in mind I was heading to the physical ready.

Throughout the examination or physical I did not have to provide a urine sample, nor was I asked to strip so the examiner could inspect my testicles. The only physical contact I had was when I had to raise my shirt so that a heart rate monitor could be strapped around my chest.

After this I was asked to mount a bicycle that was attached to a machine, and throughout that particular exam I had to keep pedalling at 50 km/h (31 mph) while the resistance was gradually increased every 3 minutes or so. Each time it was increased I had to rate how I was feeling on a scale from one to ten. One is capable, ten being absolutely buggered and near unconscious. The examiner was addiment to that I maintained that 50 km/h speed. After about the fourth resistance increase I had to slowly pedal to a stop.

Next another examiner took me away, after removing the heart rate monitor and began to manipulate my limbs in some pretty unusual and awkward positions. From twisting my arms right around my back, raising my arms, making fists, standing on alternate legs, touching toes, touching walls while turning neck. Other times I had to push the examiner with different techniques. Next I had to lie on the bed while the examiner moved my legs in all different ways, again at times I had to resist him when he was pushing in the opposite direction. It was pretty full on all the pushing, pulling and manipulating. It was like a workout within itself.

Finally the original examiner came back and I had to squat and lift a traffic cone and place it on a hook several times. Next I had to pick up a box that weighed 4 kg (8.8 lb) and place it on a trolley six times, after the sixth time he placed a red clay brick which weighs roughly 2-3 kg (4 lb – 6 lb). Again repeated the six movents, until I had three bricks in the box. Following that the examiner placed a large quantity of weights on the trolley and I had to push it to one side of the room and back again. Finally I had to pick up that box again (without the bricks) and while the examiner held his arm out at a certain height I had to demonstrate how I would place the box on a shelf. (His arm being the shelf), this was repeated six times.

All in all I felt it was a pretty gruelling physical, my limbs have been in places I never thought they would reach and the following morning I woke up feeling like I had run the City to Surf.

  24. This is accurate information.  Your coughing helps them check for a hernia.  A hernia occurs when soft tissue — usually part of the intestine — protrudes through a weak point or tear in your abdominal wall. This bulging is most likely to occur when there's increased pressure on your abdomen, such as when lifting, straining, sneezing or coughing. Forcing a cough during a hernia exam causes your abdominal muscles to contract and increase pressure within your abdomen. This may force a hernia to bulge out, making it easier to detect during the examination.
