When a limb of your body is struck, why can temporary paralysis be caused in it?

  1. Dramatic trauma to the body causes a shock to the brain to temporarily reduce nerve sensation and reaction, causing paralysis. I have personally felt this shock/temporary paralysis in a car wreck when I could not move my arm. After 8 Hours i could move it again.


  2. Shock to the brain DOES play a role in many cases, but another factor is acute trauma to the nervous system in the limb. Think of the nerve as being like a circuit breaker. Mechanical forces to the nerve itself will disrupt the transmission of electrical signals.. But like a breaker, when the cause subsides, the nerve can "reset" and begin sending impulses normally.

      Another cause can be disruption of blood flow. Blunt trauma can trigger an autonomic reflex to collapse the arteries. Without it we'd all bleed to death.  Trust me,
