When a police officer pulls you over and you are in another person's vehicle, do you show your insurance for your own vehicle or the insurance for the person's car you are driving? What types of insurance would cover you in either situation? (e.g. the person's car you're driving doesn't have insurance)

I could really use some credible documentation for this answer, if possible. Thanks in advance.

  1. show all you can, hopefully one of you has coverage.  If not don't drive another person's car until you know

  2. It all depends on what state and insurance you have. My insurance covers me in anyones car.  (Farmers insurance) So when I get pulled over, I give the officer the insurance that is in the car, tell him that I am borrowing this car, and will call my insurance company as I get home. If the persons car you're driving doesn't have insurance, you just explain you didn't know, call up YOUR insurance on the spot, and let the officer talk to your insurance person.

  3. You would show the insurance for the car, not yours.

  4. Either way you look at it, your the one behind the wheel, you'd have to prove that the car either has insurance or it don't and if it don't then your liable for the ticket cause you were the operating person of the vehicle..

  5. At any time you will have to show Prrof of insurance and registration of the car that you are in.

If you have a car and show the insurance of your car in another persons car oesnt count because the Policy if for the car not for you

  6. What is expected is the insurance for the vehicle you are driving.  However, some states will accept insurance in your name if it shows you are covered in any vehicle you drive.

  7. In most states, the insurance is for the vehicle, not for the person.  If you are driving someone else's vehicle, you need to show an officer  THEIR vehicle insurance.  If they do not have insurance or you cannot find their card, YOU will get the ticket and YOU can get the points on your license.  If you are driving a rental car, if you purchased the additional insurance they offer, you would show the rental form that shows that the insurance was purchased.  If you did not purchase the additional insurance, you need to show YOUR own personal insurance car (so long as your insurance covers you driving a rental car).  Some people's insurance has a certain minimum limit for you driving someone else's car, but you need to know that beforehand, and it will not cover you for a totally uninsured vehicle or an under-insured vehicle.  Say for example the other person's vehicle you are driving only has liability insurance.  You get into a single car accident where it's your fault.  Your own personal insurance may cover the damage to the car that you are driving, but otherwise their own insurance would not have normally paid to fix it because it was your fault.
