Question:

When a rear naked choke is sunk in deep and properly, are there any effective techniques for escaping?

Generally speaking, when I'm watching MMA fights, fighters never escape from a well sunk rear naked choke. Am I to assume that it is nearly impossible to escape? Or, are there some escape technique(s) that work in real life but just aren't legal in MMA? (I am specifically asking about unarmed opponents, so no answers please that involve an armed opponent.)

In real life fights (usually with feisty shoplifters or similar types), I've ended up in this position many times successfully and no one has even come close to escaping. I've had a few try to scratch at my face, but as long as I've kept my head back, or lowered and pressed against their back, sometimes even with my eyes closed, it hasn't been effective at stopping me.

Your thoughts? Please concentrate your answers on the technical techniques involved. I don't care to hear any moral judgements about my getting into fights. Thank you.

  1.   Are you being choked or doing it to another?how is it being done?If hands are around neck, thumbs are probably in back of neck,if you are being choked this way;place your thumbs in middle part of their hands, pry their thumbs away(thumbs are weaker than fingers),quickly let one hand go,spin around to wrap your free arm around their neck. Example, opponent has right arm around your neck, with your left hand, reach up and grab his right elbow, move your right foot to outside of his, squat slightly and put your right hip to outside of his right hip, reach around with your right hand around his back,in one swift move.....straighten your legs lifting him up(lift with both legs and arm at same time) off his feet;flipping him over your hip,now bend the arm backwards around your left knee.

  2. You can escape the RNC even if its locked in. The percentage of success goes way down but you can get out. With the RNC its the second hand behind the head that puts the pressure and actually makes the choke possible in most cases. If someone locks the second hand just keep reaching back and pulling it back out. Once you've done that you need to keep control of that arm so they don't lock it again. Next you can start working to get the arm around your neck away and pop the hooks out. Also if the person crosses their feet between your legs you can footlock them. If the person has a figure four bodylock you can do a few things. You can roll to one side so the persons feet are touching the ground. From there you can do a foot lock. Look on youtube under "body triangle". You can also bridge up so you push your body perpendicular to theirs and turn around. In a street fight I guess you can go for the eyes or something if the person doesn't know how to properly lock a RNC. I suppose you could also try breaking fingers but usually thats hard if the person knows how to lock a RNC.If you are both standing you can squat down a little to get your hips under thiers and then go for the throw. If the have hooks in and your standing you'll need to escape a hook to do the throw. If you get one locked on you, you better act fast because your out in a couple seconds. There is always a right and wrong thing to do but the right thing doesn't guarantee success. Theres hundredsof little moves like wristlocks and armbars that you can get when someone is one your back also but thats only if they're very inexperienced. Good Luck

  3. The only ways I know of to get out of that are not legal in MMA and aren't really the best things to do to your buddy who's choking you. I recently broke a guy's fingers when he surprized me and put me in a choke while I was sitting on the ground at a birthday party. Never underestimate the power of small joints, and the ease of pain compliance.

Edit- for those that say avoid altogether the question was when it's set in. Thanks, James and Drew for the other information as that was helpful at least to me, as I don't do MMA or focus on JJ.

  4. The only way I know how to defend it is keep your chin tucked down to your chest and try to control their hands.  If it's locked in there really isn't anything you can do.

  5. There are things you can do to minimize the leverage of the choke like put your back to the floor, bridge and turn into your opponent, however, that is no guarantee. Once it's sunk, and locked, no chance of escape.

Best way to escape a RNC is not get caught in one, or at the very beginning stages before it is locked.

EDIT: If you are concerned about stopping the usual shoplifter from escaping a sunk in RNC, dont be too worried, most people don't know how. But if the shoplifter was trained, you'd have a hard time getting their backs to begin with anyways so you now have a new problem to deal with.

  6. What you need to do is isolate the arm thats behind your head applying the presure. Get a hold of it and pull it down alleviating the pressure while at the same time turnig your head towards your opponents elbow and forcing your chin into your chest.  This will ensure that if your opponent is able to free the aforementioned arm placing your chin on your chest will prevent your opponent from being able to completely cut off your air way.  If he has his hooks in roll to our back placining him on his back as well than work to remove his hooks.  Once you have one hook free pivot on your hip to the same side which should place you in his gaurd and thus finish your escape from the choke.  Easier said than done..I know but the method above is your best chance of escape.  Remember if someone gets your back and begins to work for the rear naked focus on keeping your chin down and controlling the arm thats going to be used as the lever

  7. There are several things to get out of this choke and any other choke. But once it is really set in it is almost a done deal. The key is no to let it get in really good.

You are going to have to work a pressure point or joint to escape. Hopefully you relieve a little pressure. But you don't have a lot of time. Small joints work best. I believe someone said it the fingers. It doesn't take a lot of pressure on those joints especially the baby finger.

  8. Try to relieve pressure by trying to get your chin in between the choking arm and your chest. Then you are going to spin away from the locking arm. It is difficult. The rear naked is one of the most effective and simple chokes, which is why it is probably the most commonly used. This video helps A LOT!

  9. Tap or Nap. unless your way stronger than your opponent there is no escaping this. Like i said unless your stronger like if a child is aplying this to an adult Im sure the adult could easily escape.
