When a rose has died off on your rose bush ...?

... where do you trim it off to remove the spent flower ?

  1. You just pluck the whole rose off, and another one will grow in it,s place I think, I never really paid attention till you mentioned that.


  2. Cut it back to just above a healthy leaf node,  where new buds will form and grow.  Don't leave much stem, as this will die and can potentially get infected.

    If I have really spindly shoots I sometimes take them a little lower, as thicker stems will produce stronger growth and flowers - but mainly the growing season is not the key time to be pruning.

    Give them a good feed and most varieties will continue with flushes of flowers, using the energy that otherwise would have been directed into seed production, from the old pollinated flowers.
