When a solider is deployed to iraq what exactly do they do?

they do whatever the person higher than them tell you.  in the military you always have a boss.

It depends what branch of the military they are in and where exactly they are stationed.  One of my Marine friends patrolled the streets and was shot at.  He had that grenade launcher thing.  I'm not entirely sure what my other friend currently stationed there does.

Protect the lifes of civilians, a troop can find him (her)self in a firefight on one block, restoring water service on the next block, and providing 1st aid to a citizen who caught a stray round on the next.  All in one hour.  This is probably the most dynamic conflict since the Viet Nam war.  Write an "Any Soldier" letter and make a friend and you will get a first hand account of what is really going on.
