  2. Scientists havent really studied this too much (becasue it's hard to).  What they do believe however is that it's the particulate (like dust) that is shot into the atmosphere, colliding with different gas particles as well as other particulates that cause them to build up a large charge.  This charge builds up until they are able to release the electric energy causing lightning.  So above errupting volcanos you can typically see lightning with no rain.  Look up some pics...it's pretty awesome looking.
