  1. In america, the bride's family pays for the wedding ceremony, the groom's parents pay for the reception...

    My fiance and I are paying for it ourselves because either of our parents can't really be burdened with it....

English custom usually says the Bride's family pay for the wedding but nowadays usually the Bride & Groom pay for the wedding thierselves perhaps with a little help from thier families.  I think it's totally up to the wedding couple on how they feel what should happen regarding payments.  Im getting married in May'09 and we're paying for the wedding ourselves and for our wedding gifts our families are putting thier moneys together to go towards our honeymoon coz we already live together and got  all household appliances, etc...
