  1. Each of them is required to turn away to their own right side to provide safe passage.


  2. The previous answers are correct.  Right of way rules are found in FAR 91.113.

    FAR 91.113(e) Approaching head-on. When aircraft are approaching each other head-on, or nearly so, each pilot of each aircraft shall alter course to the right.

  3. On large planes, they have computers that will tell them and the other plane which way to turn. All nations teach their pilots to follow this computer over any instruction from traffic control. Like the others said, on most small aircraft, they are supposed to both turn right.

  4. Kansas is right.  It is a legal requirement to alter course to the right to avoid approaching too close to another aircraft straight ahead.  The rules are identical to the rules for power boats on open water.
