I'm going to Australia in July and I'm going to Uluru for 2 days with a tour group. It mentions staying on a permanent campsite but I was wondering how safe it is to go patrticularly if there are poisonous snakes and spiders in the outback.

  1. you are most at risk of getting bitten by a snake or spider if you go looking for them & anoying them

chances of even seeing 1 are 500 to 1 against

  2. You are just stressing. I have lived in Australia for a long time and i have never been bitten by a spider or a snake. And i have been on may a camping trips, staying in tents and swags and such on the ground.

The only thing that you will get sic of in Uluru is the red dirt. it sticks to your cloths and shoes something chronic.

  3. Your not likely to see many snakes, why? because July is winter and the snakes aren't very active in winter time, so relax. Besides Natures law is........... You leave me alone and I'll leave you alone. Remember that.

  4. Don't worry. Your not likely to see them . Snakes are as frightened of you as you are of them. They cannot hear but if they feel the vibration of people around they will usually slither away. They are only dangerous if you try and catch them or I wouldn't walk in places they may hide ,like under rocks and long grass. Take some personal insect spray with you incase you encounter mozzies anywhere.

  5. You are most at risk of getting bitten by a snake or spider if you go sticking your hand into, around or under things like hollow logs, big rocks, old car bodies and empty flower pots left out from last year.

If you are in the outback, the chances of even seeing a snake vary from negligible to non-existent.

But take the proper precautions: wear good stout shin-high boots and make lots of stomping vibrations.

  6. Don't worry - you keep away from them and they will keep away from you!

Every snake that is out there is poisonous. Pythons are the only snakes that are not and there isn't may of them in the centre of Australia, they are in the humid areas.

If you are on a tour, the guide will explain to you the things you need to do. ie You always zip your tent up so nothing can get in, you never get into your sleeping bag without shaking it out first.

I live much further south than Uluru, in the suburbs of South Australia and I have the slippery little b@stards in my back yard sometimes.......

  7. Well make sure you have all the medical supplies: Bandages, medicine etc, the normal things, remember you cant have enough, so if you sort of think you will need something like stitchs, bring them along. Bring bug repellant like mortein and some for mozzies (aerogard), try not to get nervous thinking about it. You may not even use your medical supplies, they're there for you not to worry :).

    All the best!
