  1. Simple appliances that do not use microcontrollers; vacuum cleaner, toasters, and many other simular appliances use no power when switched off. Most electronics however, and many newer "white" household appliances will use a very small amount of electricity to keep the device in standby to run the microcontroller/clock. This amount of power is no more than a couple watts in most cases, but is necessary for proper operation.

  2. Many appliances have a 'stand-by' mode so they can turn on more quickly when you hit the 'power' button.  This stand-by mode uses a small amount of energy, but when you have several appliances drawing a little bit of energy all the time, it can add up.

To combat this, you can either unplug the appliances when not in use, or plug them into a power strip and turn the power strip off when you're done.

There are also 'smart strips' into which you can plug a main appliance (such as a TV) and then plug other appliances into the other outlets (i.e. DVD player, CD player, etc.).  When you turn the main appliance off, it cuts power to the other outlets, so they're not drawing power.  Smart strips also have regular outlets if you do want an appliance to continue drawing power while the main appliance is off.  They're pretty handy when you have a lot of peripherals.

  3. I can't speak for all appliances, but most television sets do use a little electricity. It's for the "instant on" ability. If unplugged, it takes a few seconds to get your picture when you plug it back in. A toaster won't use electricity if not in use. All appliances that include a clock are using electricity if the clock is working. A computer doesn't use much when not in use, but the monitor does. Please turn off the monitor when you will be away from the screen for more than 20 minutes. So the answer is: depends on the specific appliance. Hope this helps.

  4. If the switch on the wall is off then the unit will consume zero energy as the circut is closed. If you are going on holidays I would suggest unplugging the units though as a closed switch wont protect from a power surge.
