  1. The five planets Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn were known from ancient times. No one knows how Mercury was "found," because its existence has long been known. The first planet to be discovered in modern times was Uranus in 1781, then Neptune in 1846, and Pluto (maybe since demoted) in 1930.

  2. The planet Mercury was never "found".  It is one of the naked-eye planets, and known in antiquity.  It was named Mercury after the messenger of the Gods, because of the speed at which it moves in the sky.

  3. known to the ancients. nobody discovered it.

  4. Mercury is one of the five planets which have been known since ancient times. Because they are so bright, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn have always been easily visible in the night sky, and because their position in the sky changes (sometimes disappearing, only to reappear at a later date!) a brief glance at the night sky now and then, is all it would have taken for our stone age hunter gatherer ancestors, to notice their existence.

But I'm sure they didn't call it Mercury.
