Do you show it at the security at your USA airport because of flying on Swiss Air or does it wait until you actually reach your airport in Italy...which will be Rome. Then later we depart from Milan so I think we have to show it there too or does it wait until we reach the USA again. I have never needed a passport(I do already have one now though) because Canada didn't require it until now&that's the only other country I've been to.

  1. you show your passport when you are at your departure airport and then when you land you stand in a long line for immigration and show them your passport.

when i visited europe i wore a money belt. you put all your passport and credit cards in it and it goes around your waist and you zip it up under your pants. no one can see it and you have your ID and credit cards with you for emergency.

they are very slim and you cant feel them. i got the rick steves one and it was great.

  2. You show it at the point of departure, at the airport in Italy, on leaving Italy and on arriving back in the USA. It is also a requirement to carry your passport at all times when in Europe if not a citizen of Europe

Edit ..You ARE required to carry your passport in Europe in spite of what others may say

  3. 1.You show yor passport at the  airline check-in counter at the Airport where you are leaving from  Ex.  Atlanta --Delta Airlines or any airlines that you are traving on if you will be leaving the country.

2.You show it as you board your flight  that takes you out of the country Ex.  (If the flight you are taking (second flight)- if you your starting point was on the West Coast)

If you depart from the East Coast , you will have only one flight most of the time. You will show it again as you board the plane.

    3. You will show it in the first European EU country you land in...If you have a change.... Or at your destination.

    On the way back home

1.You will show your passport at the check-in and  when you board the plane.

    2. You will show it again if you have a change before entering the USA when boarding the plane.

    3. You will show it in the first city you land in in the USA

Always keep your passport handy when traveling abroad.

Regarding carrying an id  instead of your passport while touring the cities, is the best idea.. I do this..

You can lock up your passport in the hotel room safe. However, copy all your important documents-- ID, tickets, cc, etc. and put them in your money belt hidden inside you pants . Carry this with you at all times.  This way you have some proof of a passport if you are questioned. But carry your drivers license always.

  4. You will need to show it at the US airport when leaving, as well as when landing in Europe.

For within-Europe flights, you will need it to get through security since you don't have a European ID card.

  5. I traveled to Rome just last month, so I am familiar with the procedures in Italy.  You will need to show your passport at the ticket counter when you check in in the US for your international flight.  Then you will need a picture ID (just keep your passport out) for security at the US airport.  You'll get on the plane just like you would on a normal domestic flight.  Near the end of the flight, they will most likely hand out cards that ask you for name, birthdate, passport number, etc.  Fill it out.  When you get off the plane, you will take a bus to the main terminal, where you will enter customs.  Get in the line marked "NON EU PASSPORT HOLDERS"  You will wait in line and then go up to a booth, where they will ask you for your passport and Immigration card (the one you filled out on the plane).  The person will ask you how long you are staying, stamp your passport, and you will be in the main part of the airport.  I left from Rome, so I'm not sure of the details for Milan, but if it is the same, you will have to show it at the ticket counter, security (where you will get another stamp), and back in the US, with your US immigration card, which you will fill out on the plane.  As far as the pickpocketing goes, just make sure it is with you wherever you go, and not in your back pocket.  As long as you can always be checking to make sure its still there, you should be fine.  Thats what I did.  Just in case though, make a photocopy of your picture page and keep it with your stuff in case you lose your passport.  This way the US Embassy will have an easier time of getting you a new passport so you can come back home.  Good luck and have fun!  Italy is so amazing!!!

  6. You'll probably be using it for your ID when you depart.  You show it whenever you enter/leave a foreign country, and upon your return home.

Add:  You are not required to carry your passport on you at all times in Europe; however, you are required to carry ID, and the passport does suffice.
