When and where is the best time and place to go and see lightning storms?

I'd love to go on holiday somewhere for a few days and be able to see lightning in the distance while I sit on a balcony drinking wine.

So does anyone know where to go and the best time of year?

Actually, some of the best lightning displays are in the desert areas of the southwest.

The desert thunderstorms are easily visible from 100 miles away and with little rain from them, the lightning streaks are often many miles long.

The best time for them is the late summer (mid July through August) in southern Arizona and southern New Mexico. The high heat of the deserts often cause very strong updrafts and very frequent lightning especially spider lightning that spread just under the cloud base. (Would recommend sitting on some of the mountain passes that overlooks desert areas. Many of the more spectacular lighting photographs from distances are taken in southeast Arizona.

There are numerous places around the world that get their share of lightning storms. I know that in the U.S., Tampa, FL sees the most thunderstorms per year than any other city in the country. During the summer months, thunderstorms can occur nearly everyday. Tornadoes are uncommon with thunderstorms in Florida so that should not be a problem. Just make sure that you are in a sturdy building equipped with a lightning rod and that it has piping so that any lighting bolt that were to strike the building would not cause serious damage.

Hillsborough County, Florida is one of the most active lightning strike areas in the world.  The best time of day would be during the afternoon, let's say around 2-5pm.

Great Lakes region in spring and summer (May through August). London, ON is the thunderstorm capital of Canada. It's only a two hour drive from Detroit and Niagara Falls isn't too far away either.
