Just out of curiousity... I want to hear your stories!

When I was 6, I was eating fish and asked my mother where the fish came from. She said they came from the ocean and I asked if they were the same fish that were once alive, and she said yes. I ended up throwing up the fish (not on purpose, but I was so disgusted) and apparently I didn't stop crying for three hours. I told my parents I wouldn't eat meat again. They didn't think I'd stick with it but supported my decision, and almost 10 years later, I'm still a proud veggie! :)

  1. It was mostly ethical and moral concerns about animal welfare. was veg for 1.5 or 2 years before I became vegan. I became vegan while studying the environmental impact of agri-business. I realized how ecologically unsustainable a large scale omnivorous diet is to sustain globally. Producing meat places massive stresses on the earth's resources and the environment. I study environmental engineering and majoring in agricultural waste management. Some of my other reasons include:

    1. Cruelty to Animals

    2. Health

    3. World Hunger

    4. Worker Rights

    5. Government Negligence

    6. The environment

Also reading some books by Peter Singer about ethics really changed my perspective.

Good on ya for staying strong and commited.... be proud! :)

  2. I stopped eating meat when i was about 8 years old as a dare/challenge from my friend. we both had to do it and she didnt even last a night by i havn't eaten meat since - 8 years now! I dont think i could ever go back to eating meat, but i proably wont become vegan due to health concerns and the fact that dairy products and eggs/ etc dont actually hurt the animals themselves. i am happy as long as the animals are free range and are treated fairly. woot go vegos!!

  3. There was a dying pigeon at the local shops, it has lost it's tail, presumably by having it run over. It was in a state of quiet distress, just looking around, beak opening and closing wide regularly, giving the impression of being in a lot of pain. It also happened to be poring rain.

The bird was now in a plant pot; in fact I had become aware of it when another pedestrian had picked it up from the gutter and placed it in there, before going off on his way.

It was in a state which though obviously dire was compelling to want to help it in some way. I called a wild life carer I know and was advised that the best thing I could do would be to "euthanize it", they recommended a blow to its head with a stone. I wasn't to keen on preforming this procedure, even if it somehow was the most humane course of action. I was however willing to try it if it was the right thing to do.

I had already wrapped the bird up, doing my best to ensure it was warm, dry and as comfortable as could be managed but the time a spend looking for the stone to use to "help it on its way" was enough to let me consider the situation unfolding. I did't know what made this bird's life and I had doubts about my rights to take it. I continued to stick to the plan however, as I knew my feelings were not objective.

I have never killed anything myself, and I couldn't kill this bird. When I went to, the bird did not seem too keen on the idea either, and I just couldn't.

I carried the bird home under my jacket. It went cold and still on the way home. It was probaby already dead when I placed it in the rag lined cardboard box at home but I ensured it was warm just in case it would somehow pull through.

    It didn't.

I've always known I can't kill animals and wouldn't want to; and I've long considered myself hipocrital eating meat despite knowing this. And, this is why I am a vegetarian.

  4. Always was a vegetarian.

PS-have once tasted a tiny morsel of mutton and used to have eggs till some time ago. Stopped eggs due to allergies. Still consider myself a vegetarian.

  5. enviornmental animal rights religious(buddhism) and health recently trying to become vegetarian just eat fish and shrimp i dont call myself vegetarian yet though

  6. 13.  I'd just seen a special on PBS about "Farming" techniques.

  7. World Hunger.....Health.....Enviromental Reasons.

I became a vegetarian at 19 years old because I started doing some research and fell into piles and piles of information that blew my mind.

A lot of people are currently unaware on all the issues surrounding eating animals in todays world, yet, I'm noticing more and more people who are being educated on meat eating/ vegetarian issues and are immediately becoming vegetarians.

I didn't know it would be so EASY to stop eating animals! Or that my body would feel so much better/healthier from it!

    It is amazing!

  8. Today. Partly because, I'm trying to annoy himself into shaving that God awful designer stubble/beard he's grown so attached to.

  9. I became a vege for ethical reasons, hated the killing of animals..........now 20+ years later I couldn't imagine eating an animal.  Its the idea of eating flesh, YUK! ironically my daughter who is now 9 has always been vege, we couldn't cook meat and now that she understands where it comes from she is FIRMLY against it!  more strongly than me!

  11. Mines a rather tragic and long tale.

Long story short, I ate a pet rabbit and puked, cried, screamed and almost killed.

Ever since I won't go near meat, at all.

People try to get me to eat it, but I know I won't.

My parents don't support me, but I could careless.

My cousin comes over every month with veggie food for me, because he's vegetarian too. I'm not old enough to get a job yet, but will be soon.

    I'm currently going vegan. ^-^

  12. I wanted to be a vegetarian when I was obese probably by 10 years old so I stopped eating meat and ate veggies. Then I never ate meat when I improved my body shape I just wanted to keep eating veggies maybe because Ive been eating them for a few years.
