My boyfriends enlisted in the Navy and hes at Basic right now. I was just wondering if he would be able to start writing letters home right away or if there was a time period where they couldnt communicate with people back home.

  1. I can't answer for the Navy (I was Army), but I'm going to guess it should be similar.

He can write them whenever he has time...which at the beginning will be hard to come by.  I didn't write much at first because I found sleep was more important that staying up late with a flashlight to write.  As time goes on he'll have more time for it, but don't be upset if you don't get anything at first.  Its a huge change and there's a lot going on for the first phase of BCT.

Edit:  As for Sunday (again, it may differ from what I experienced), we had that day off and did get to go to church, have longer showers, etc...but, we were also expected to clean barracks so emaculately that while letter writing was possible, our time was still occupied by other things.

  2. I was in the navy for 6 years. When I was in boot, we had six hours on sunday of personal time. You could write letters, shave your legs, take showers that lasted more than 5 minutes, iron you clothes, and even go to church.

SO yes, he gets to write letters on Sundays.
