It all depends on the school and the age of the person in school.

If they're in primary school or year 8/9 then it is as other people have stated December 12th 2008 - January 27th 2009 but if they're in year 10,11,12/13 or university the dates are different once again, from at least two weeks earlier than the 12th for year 10's and earlier for higher year levels.

Although this also differs if it is a private school, it is most likely that they will go back on a Wednesday or the Monday of the next week because that is just how they work.
