When at the gas staion why do you have to shut engine down?

why do they insist you shut your engine off when fueling at your local gas pump, yet NASCAR is all about safety and the drivers dont have to turn their engines off when they fuel up on pit road....why is that? really i am just curious!

because when you in to pay to the front desk probably when you return do not find your car lol

(1) some cars back fire so there's a small danger of fire

(2) that is a old rule that they never change - just to be safe

(3) Nascar is about racing.  They are concerned about safety, but they want to win even more.  Otherwise they would stay below 55 too.

Nascar is about safety, yeah. They're safe! Nothing to spark, no smoking allowed, and they fill 10 gallons in 5 seconds!

Because a random spark in your engine might ignite the gasoline fumes. Same reason why you're not supposed to smoke.

NASCAR has all sorts of flame surpressers and baffles and fuel cells.  You don't.

I'm as curious as you are too. My dad told me that shutting off the engine will make it cooler, avoiding any sparks. Whatever that means. As for NASCAR, they are professionals. Time is of the essence esp in a race.

The rule is for safety.  Even though the pit stops allow the engine to keep running (I think - but they might shut down, then get a push start back onto the track), there is an inherent hazard in dispensing a volatile fuel like gasoline while hot exhaust is coming from your vehicle.  Gasoline fumes, some of which escape into the air when you're filling your tank, are heavier than air, and could easily find their way to your tailpipe.  It's very rare, but there have been fire and explosions at gas stations.  Also, no smoking while fueling.
