  1. only an amateur just goes for the name

  2. Always read the form. At least that way you've got a chance of beating the bookmaker.

I take into consideration the breeding of the horse, the trainers form, the jockeys form, the course, the going (whether the ground is firm, good, soft, heavy etc).

I know that some people who don't really understand horse racing won't bother with all of that, and just go for the name and occasionally have a little bit of luck but this would be very rare and just playing into the Bookmakers hands.

  3. It really does depend on how you feel about backing horses.  I have friends that go racing that only back the horse according to the jockey's colours, or how "pretty" the horse looks, and even the name.  Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't!

Yes the form is very important, but I'd say go with your gut instinct.  The form doesn't always wrok out - that's why we have plenty of 50-1 and 100-1 winners and placed horses!

  4. you must read the form my friend....

  5. If racing ran true to form there wouldn,t be such a thing as bookmakers, the only sure thing is that bookies will always be rich. and so will racing,s in crowd, if you,re a working class punter you have no chance unless you are lucky enough to  click on a multiple bet with a number of selections and a small outlay. Sadly I speak from experience, costly experience and I am not unique, the country, nay! the world is full of mug punters.

  6. Yes, read the form! also check the grade of the race, this is displayed in Class 1 - 6 and in Hadicaps. Handicaps give every horse a chance by making the better form horses carry more weight. Therefore you can take chance on the name of a high priced horse or pick your favourite jockey! (only in handicaps).

  7. I go for form & I also like to look for names that are family related or Welsh named etc.

  8. a form guide to a punter is like a bible to a priest, read it, read it again then again, learn it word for word know every detail of every horse, grade, weight, distance, conditions, barrier draw and even jockey can play a part, after u memorize the form PICK ONE WINNER. and go hard,u will usually find a stand out eachday, otherwise u end up wining and losing getting nowhere, watch replays very important to get a true value of a horse

  9. I've done it all; read its form, calculate numbers, look at jockeys/trainers, look at track bias, look at them in the walking ring/on the track warming up, tote board watching, picking by post position, breeding, names, tips, overhearing info waiting in line to bet, hunches, picking to beat the favorite.  The only thing I don't do is pick by silks colors.

It all works and it all doesn't work.  I bet every race.  My best advice is to be selective and only bet when you've picked a "sure thing".  Being selective says you've done your homework, like a horse for all the best reasons and you're not just betting to bet.

  10. My god ! a taxi driver from Manchester asking a question like that... I feel let down really, I thought Taxi drivers Knew Everything! Guess you know all about wet weather form study!!!

Many different ways to pick a horse. Being a woman its a case of seeing a name I like and looking to see if it has been placed in a few of its last races.
