Question:

When breastfeeding is it safe to have an xray?

I am a breastfeeding mom. Yesterday I hurt my ankle really bad. My doctor wanted me to go to the ER. I don't like it because I would sit there for hours in the waiting room. This morning it looks like my ankle has an extra egg sitting on it. So if I went to have it looked at would it effect my milk? Or should I just wrap it up with an ace bandage? It only hurts when I put pressure on it.

  1. Having an x-ray is fine.  It is such a small amount of radiation that it won't effect your milk.

  2. You should to to the doctor or hospital and have it checked,  If you are concerned about your milk, mention to the doctor that you are breastfeeding and ask him if it's OK.  Either way, you need to have your injury tended to if you want it to heal properly.

  3. Yes, it's fine.  The radiation from an x-ray passes through your body and does not leave any trace radiation behind.

  4. If your b*****s droop all the way down to your ankles, you should not go.

  5. An x-ray on your ankle won't affect anything to do with breastfeeding.

  6. When breastfeeding is it safe to have an xray?

    Not at the same time!

Sorry, for the weak attempt at humor..I agree with the previous answerer..an ankle x-ray should be no problem, but ask your doctor.

  7. First off, an x-ray of your ankle will not expose your b*****s to ANY radiation.  X-rays do not fly all willy nilly around a room exposing all your body parts to radiation.  X-rays are highly directed and concentrated beams of radiation, which only expose the area of interest.

The following is a website which has questions answered by qualified personnel who are experts in radiation and its effects.  Here is a similar question about an ankle x-ray on a pregnant woman:

"QUESTION:  I found out about four months ago that I was pregnant and I need an x ray on my ankle. Will the radiation affect the baby?

ANSWER:  X rays of your ankle or foot, performed with modern technology, will deliver a negligible dose of radiation to your unborn baby. The dose will be too small to measure. It will be substantially less than the dose you (and every person) receive each day from natural environmental radiation.

Conclusion:  There is no reason for concern regarding x rays of your ankle.

Obviously your uterus is closer to your ankle than your b*****s, so if the uterus isn't exposed to radiation during an ankle x-ray, your b*****s certainly wouldn't be.

As to your question regarding radiation damaging your breast milk, it does not.  You could even have a mammogram (x-rays directed at the breast) and still breastfeed.

"X-rays do not affect mother's milk, so you can safely resume breastfeeding immediately after the mammogram."
