Question:

When building a boat and sealing the seams with fiberglass on the inside. Do I use fiberglass throughout?

The bottom of the hull is covered with epoxy and fiberglass and the seams are fiberglassed on the inside but should i use fiberglass thoughout the inside of the hull also? or just epoxy?

  1. I don't.  I build wooden boats of all kinds... I use boat epoxy and mostly what is referred to as the "one off fiberglass" method.  I mix a filler with my epoxy on "all seams and all joints" and use a layer of fiberglass tape over all interior seams and joints.  I only laminate the rest with epoxy - I do "not" fiberglass the inside of my hulls.  On the exterior however, I use two layers of fiberglass tape on all corners, joints, I double that around the forward bow stem, and I use one layer of 7oz (boatglass) on the entire hull, and two layers below the waterline.  I hope you are enjoying building your boat, as much as I do.

  2. the first thing to go into the mold is the gelcoat than fiber glass and resin layed in or blown in than the stringers  (wood from bow to stern) than more fiberglass  if you build it at home and you are married .....
