Question:

When buying a used motorcycle what should I look for as far as something being wrong with the bike?

I am looking at a 2002 HD 883 sportster...I know NOTHING about bikes, but I might get this one to keep, learn how to ride etc. but since i am such a rookie, i dont really know if somone is selling me c**p or not, thanks!

  1. Most problems with sportsters are caused by owners working on them when it isn't nessesary.

    1. Make sure it has a clean title.

    2. Look for signs of improper maintance or modifications. In other words stripped screws, bolts or excessive gasket sealant.

    3. Look for signs of damage from accidents.

    4. An after market seat is a plus. The stock one can be used as a medieval torture devise.

    5. Find a friend that is familar with motorcycles to help you.

      


  2. If this is your first bike, and you are NOT hung up on the Harley label, then I would suggest you buy a used Japanese bike. They are super reliable, inexpensive and very low maintenance.

    Regardless of what you buy, take a hard look at how the bike was maintained and the riding style of the owner.
