Question:

When can I expect novacaine to wear off?

I finally went through with my root canal, and it has just under 2 hours since my novacaine shot. The right side of my lip feels puffy and numb. Is this a result of the novacaine wearing off? I have also been told to take 3 advil every 6 hours for two days for pain and inflamation. Is that alittle excessive?

  1. It once took five hours for a dental anesthetic to wear off and I all I had was a filling. The d**n dentist wasn't very careful and hit a nerve head on. The advil dosage sounds about right.

  2. Two to four hrs

  3. getting numb for  a root canal is different than just a filling it should where off in 3-4 hours after your RCT was done. you should take 800mg of motrin every 4-6 hours , for the first couple of days and then as needed after that. You also should be on an anti-biotic

  4. It's normal to be numb for 3 to 4 hours. Everyone is different though. If your numb for more than 6 hours, I would call your dentist. As for the medicine they have you on, it seems normal to me. Root canals can be very fragile things. You definetely do not want it to get infected.
