Question:

When can I get my british shorthair boy & girl kitten fixed & still get the characteristics?

We are bringing home a twin set of British Shorthairs. The female kitten is blue and the boy is cream. We very much want to keep the characteristics of the Brits with the big muscular body. I'm worried that neutering too early will not allow our boy to develop the round face. But if I don't neuter/spay early enough, I am worried about them mating...and I really don't want THAT to happen. Please help!!

  1. Check with your Vet. They can tell you more than we can. The only thing is Most vets don't neuter or spay by age they usually go by weight or at least out here towards Mass and Rhode Island they do.

Just to be safe check with your Vet.

  2. Your BSH boy will get a nice big face and the muscular body that they are famous for and it does not matter at what age you neuter him.  He will not, however, have the same appearance of that of an unneutered male.  Best to check with your vet about the best times for neutering the pair.  Even kittens we think are far to young can surprise us!

    Good Luck!

  3. Hi,

I was always told that you should wait until the boy is 10 months old, If the boy sprays then  get him fixed asap The girl get fixed 5-6 months.

Apparently waiting until 10 months old allows his cheeks to develope quicker.

However, I have always found my kittens develop very well even when neutered at 5-6 months., maybe I have just been lucky!
