Does anyone know when can I view the Aurora Australis. I have always wanted to. The pictures I've seen are just so beautiful & I want to see it with my own eyes. I live in Auckland but I don't mind heading to south island if that what it takes. Is there a specific date? Is it during autumn or winter? or anytime else? How can I find out more? If it's during this winter, then I have to plan a trip quick because uni will be out in 3 weeks' time. Any info is much appreciated.

  1. You'll have to take your chances as to "when", just like everybody else..

As to where, I have seen it as far north as Rotorua, but the further south you are, the more likely you are to see one.

They work on a cyclical basis over an eleven year period.

You may find details at the address below.

  2. I don't believe there is a particular time of year as such that you can view them, its more a case of being in the right pace at the right time.

Tekapo in he central south island is known for having the clearest night sky in NZ and consequently they often get to experience Aurora viewings

    check out this link

http://www.laketekapo.cc/aurora.html it explains a bit more about the conditions that are necessary for viewing the aurora. I believe there have also been viewings in Wellington and Invercargill, you definetly need to go south anyway.

    Good luck!
