I took Drivers ED last year in school,so I didn't have to take a test in order to get my permit. I'm 16 years old and I hear that right now,im not allowed to drive in the NYC area, even with a permit. When I turn 17,will I be able to start practice driving in NYC ?Im sorry, but I tried reading on the NY DMV website, and its confusing.

  1. Why do you want to drive in New York City?  I moved back here from Texas to not have to drive.  Why in God's name would you want to drive here?

And my most direct answer is call the DMV to ask.  If you want a short route to them, dial 311 and tell them what you need.  They'll either have the answers or be able to forward you to a DMV near you.  Call tomorrow during normal business hours.

  2. Nope, you will not be able to practice driving in NYC with a permit. You cannot practice in NYC with a permit unless the car you are driving has dual breaks (like from the driving schools). You can though still take your road test at 17 and then you will be able to drive with your license.

Good luck, but you shouldn't even bother having a car in Manhattan!

  3. Two answers, both bad advice.  If you are sixteen with a valid learner's permit that means that you are allowed to drive with a licensed driver in the car with you.  Since you took driver's ed, they allow you to take your road test a year early, when you are seventeen.  If you pass that you will have a license with out any restrictions.

No subway?  Ever heard of SIRT?
