When can I take the CLEP exam?

is it only taken before the semester starts or can you take it anytime?

You can CLEP at any time.  Once you pass the CLEP test, it usually takes a few weeks for the scores to be posted at your college.  Colege Board actually keeps your CLEP scores on file for 20 years, so you can request transcripts at a later time, if necessary.  Be sure to check with your college to find out which CLEP tests they accept credit for, as not all colleges grant credit for all CLEP exams.  For more information on CLEP, check out the College Board website at:
