When can the receiving team switch positions? Is it when the serving playing actually hits the ball for the serve or is it when the ball leaves his/her her hand during the toss for the serve? What is that exact point that the defensive team can switch positions?

  1. It depends on your "overlap" position.  If you are inches behind the player that is an overlap, then you have to wait until the contact of the serve.  When I used to set, I would make sure that I had several feet before I was guilty of the out of position call so that I could leave before the contact and be going full speed before the serve actually happened.  (That is what you need when you are slow.)

  2. they have to hit the ball on the serve, or putting it in play. You can sometimes get away early but you can be called for out of rotation.

  3. It is supposed to be when they make the contact to serve it over the net, but when I play some refs will let you get away with leaving a second or so early.
