When cats mate, is it painful for them?

certainly for the girl.  males have barbs.

The queen will signal her willingness to mate with a unique posture: head down, forelegs bent, rear quarters raised to expose the v***a ( this raised posture is called lordosis), with the tail raised and held to the side of the body, all designed to accomodate entry by the tom cat's p***s. Her rear legs will tread rhythmically, as if walking in place.

The tom cat will mount the female from the rear, holding her on the back of the neck with his teeth. This biting behavior may in part be to ensure cooperation, but may also stimulate a part of the female's brain that induces ovulation.

Whole male cats have barbed penises (much like a fishhook), and upon withdrawal, the female cat will often scream (whether from ecstasy or pain is questionable). It is also believed that the barbed p***s stimulates ovulation. In fact, breeders sometimes use "Teaser Toms" to stimulate ovulation and end the estrus cycle in queens which are not yet ready for breeding. Teaser Toms are neutered by vasectomy, leaving the barbs on the p***s to stimulate ovulation.

it is questionable. not for the toms, but he has a 'barb' shaped p***s so it is very possible the female screams in pain, but i have read it is put forward it may be ecstacy...who knows?! But my cat seemed to enjoy it & wanted to do it again & again until we had her spayed so if it does hurt at the end then it must be good somewhere along the line lol

Probably painful.

It's tough to know for sure that the barbs hurt but judging by the queen's behavior after mating, it is not a fun experience, just a biological necessity.

I don't think it hurts the males, unless they hang around too long and the girl attacks.

Cats just have s*x to make kittens, not for fun.  Although even altered cats will sometime climb on top in the same manner as they would for s*x as a display of dominance.

Cats are 'Induced Ovulaters'. The barbs on the male p***s are there because the pain of withdrawl stimulates the female to then ovulate. This is why 99% of cat breedings are successful.
