  1. The Restoration

  2. According to royalists, Charles II became king when his father Charles I was executed at Whitehall on 30 January 1649, the climax of the English Civil War. The English Parliament did not proclaim Charles II king at this time, however, and England entered the period known to history as the English Interregnum.

When Oliver Cromwell "ruled" England, this period was known as the Protectorate.  He passed his power to Richard Cromwell.  Then...After the Protectorate collapsed under Richard Cromwell in 1659, General George Monck invited Charles to return and assume the throne in what became known as the Restoration.

  3. The English Restoration, or simply The Restoration, was an episode in the history of Britain beginning in 1660 when the English monarchy, Scottish monarchy and Irish monarchy were restored under King Charles II after the English Civil War. The term Restoration may apply both to the actual event by which the monarchy was restored, and to the period immediately following the accession of Charles II.
