I know when i check it, the oil is still resonably hot and i was wandering if checking it straight after flight would burn my fingers.

  1. The oil can be quite hot immediately after flight. You should however allow at least 20 minutes for the oil to drain back down into the sump before checking its level anyway. As already mentioned, if you're fueling and cleaning up the aircraft, that should probably allow sufficient time for this to happen.

The only other problem I have seen with oil (aircraft or otherwise) is the person who may have an allergic reaction to petroleum products on the skin. Long term exposure to it can be detrimental.

  2. I dunno a combustion engine runs at about 200 degrees and aircraft engines are designed so that the oiling system is part of the cooling system-- so the oil is hotter than 200 degrees f  so how hot does something have to be before you get burned ????? A well done steak is only about 165 f degrees!!

  3. yeah it will

  4. It can, if you are not careful.  Aircraft engine oil gets quite hot.  However, by the time you have refueled and done all of the other business that you do on the ground, things will have cooled off enough so that the risk is low.
