Question:

When closing your pool, how much do you drain the water?

I have always been told to drain the water from an inground pool to just below the skimmer intake to reduce the chance of water freezing and damaging the pipes.

I just talked to a pool company who says they don't drain the water at all, and that they haven't done this in over 20 years of being in business.

This makes me nervous. I'd love to hear from anyone who can comment on either of these methods. Thanks in advance.

  1. I was always told below the skimmer and return jets, and blow out the lines.

  2. I would be nervous too. Did they say if they guarantee the pool will not freeze? There should be no water in the skimmer, filter, piping or pump.

  3. i f your pool has a freeze guard you dont need to close the pool because this will bypass the on switch and automatically turn on pump it will keep running until it stays above 32 degrees at night  in the winter i own a pool company  eleven years experince

  4. JUST BELOW THE SKIMMERS,IF YOU CLOSE IT,MAKE SURE YOU DRAIN THE FILTER AND PUMP.
