Question:

When counting food groups, what would 'Silk Soy Yogurt' be counted as?

I am trying to count my food groups and I was wondering what Silk's Soy Yogurt would be counted as (also, Silk's Soy Milk for that matter). Being that it is yogurt, I would think to count it as dairy, but obviously it has no dairy in it, and only soy with added calcium and vitamin D, which is usually counted as Meat/Beans. So, would I count this under Dairy, or Meat/Beans? or would I count it as Dairy AND Meat/Beans? or could I just choose whichever one I was lacking during my day to count it as? Thanks!

  1. that would go in dairy, since the new food guide now shows alternatives like soy milk and stuff.

  2. Soy milk is part of the Meat/Bean/Protein category.  Calling it "milk" is a bit of a misnomer, since it is basically the juice extracted from the soybean.

  3. You should count it as a legume and a sugary fruit since it contains   so much sugar, starch, glucose syrup, and pectin along with the little bit of fruit.  I say legume because that's what soy is ( a textured legume). Plants  being used as a dairy alternative don't change the family that they actually fall in scientifically.

Look further down this page in the link and you'll see the scientific classification of soybeans.  No matter how you change or texture them they will always be legumes because of their properties.  So always count soy as a serving of beans.

I reiterate that you need to count this as a sweet too though because it has four different types of sugar in it.

  4. Soy yogurt goes under Legumes

  5. That would be under the legumes group.

Dairy and meat are not appropriate food groups for planning a vegetarian diet. The food pyramid was heavily influenced by animal agriculture.

  6. I would count it under the protein group.

  7. I would count it under the dairy heading.  It has all the nutrition of dairy without any of the blus:)
