Question:

When cycling a fish tank, should the water not be treated with conditioner?

I have a 2.5 gallon tank and have betta conditioner.

  1. dont treat the water until cycling process is done. thats if your doing the nitrogen cycle but with fishes yes.

  5. Wait a minute, I can't believe I posted such a stupid answer!   It's obviously past my bedtime.  Sorry!!

    I just went back and re-read a few facts about nitrobacters, the nitrifying bacteria that converts ammonia and nitrite into nitrate and chlorine kills it.  Duh!  And of course, chloramine is a form of ammonia, so YES!  You have to condition your water while you're cycling.  If you don't you'll just kill off your bacteria at the same time as you're trying to grow it and nothing will ever happen.

  6. yes you should treat any water that comes from your tap. Tap water contains chlorine which is lethal to fish. You have to add chlorine remover to any and all water that you add to your tank. Unless of course you are using bottled water.
