  1. 420 became official on April 20th.

  2. I didn't know it had become officially a holiday.

There are many crazy theories but this one makes the most sense.

According to Steven Hager, editor of High Times, the term 420 originated at San Rafael High School, in 1971, among a group of about a dozen pot-smoking wiseacres who called themselves the Waldos, who are now pushing 50.

The term was shorthand for the time of day the group would meet, at the campus statue of Louis Pasteur, to smoke pot. Intent on developing their own discreet language, they made 420 code for a time to get high, and its use spread among members of an entire generation.

A quote from one of the Waldos in the High Times article states, "We did discover we could talk about getting high in front of our parents without them knowing by using the phrase 420."

  3. Actually ignore the police related part of the top posters comment. It is false, some "top contributor".

California penal code 420 regulates the obstruction of access to public land.

It became "official" to many pot consumers for a few decades now. In short its code, but has been so widely recognized its kind of obvious now when someone says 420 they are referring to pot.

The origin comes from a group of high school boys in San Rafael, Calif. in 1971. Everyday at 4:20 p.m., they would meet at a statue of chemist Louis Pasteur on their campus. At first they used the time to follow a map in search of an abandoned pot patch.

As time passed, the boys found use in "420" as not only a time to light up, but also as a code around parents, cops and teachers. They had no idea that their code would become an internationally accepted term for pot users.

So i hope you had a nice 420, i did, i barely remember it but i know it was fun. Always is.
