When was the US citizenship fully granted to African Americans?

Even after the abolishment of slavery and ratification of the 14th amendment, black people in the United States were not treated as social equals, so I feel as if Vlee1415's answer (and Hope's!) is closest to accurate. This social inequality extended not only to black Americans (although it can be argued that they, perhaps after American Indians, suffered the most grievous injustices) but also to U.S.-dwelling people of Asian descent and all others who were not WASPs.

    I think I might have recommended this book to you before, but it bears repeating: Ronald Takaki is an excellent cultural anthropologist whose book, A Different Mirror, provides a history of the United States through the lens of multiculturalism. I think it should be required reading for everyone studying American culture and history. He also happens to address your question in this book; I think you would enjoy reading it.

  8. The Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution reversed the Dred Scott decision and made all freed slaves (and those that had been slaves) citizens of the United States. In other words, on July 9th, 1868, African Americans were officially recognized as citizens.
