our currency went metric from Australian Pound To the Dollar in 1966 which was followed by  primary schools being taught Metrics in 1972 and high schools in 1973 and the total conversion was completed in 1988

It wasn't a single point in time, it happened over a very long period of time starting in 1947 (which was when it was decided that metric would be introduced) up until 1988 (when the last remaining vestiges of the old system was done away with).
