  1. France didn't "become a country" overnight so it is difficult to give a date but I am more in favor of 486 than 843 as Clovis, king of the Franks, is generally considered the first "French" king. (843 is the first official record of a French "state" called France so it all depends on what you mean by "country").

As for the colors of the flag, I was schooled in the French school system and heard so many different versions from teacher to teacher that the truth is no one really knows for sure what the 3 colors stand for. One of the most commonly accepted explanations was given by Rillifan.

But where did blue and red come from? Saint Martin was clad in blue so Charlemagne later adopted the color as his own. Red was the color of Saint Denis. These two colors were worn by the officers of the Paris Civil Guard. White is the color of monarchy. What doesn't make sense is why French revolutioners would have kept colors associated with religion and monarchy at the time they were overthrowing both. Maybe they had forgotten the origin of the two Parisian colors? You'll find another explanation below:

Edit: And if you are asking when the French Republic was proclaimed, the date is 1789.

  2. When France became a country depends on your definition.

The date of 843 that has already been cited refers to the Kingdom of West Francia which was created by the Treaty of Verdun.

However one might also cite the  establishment of the Merovingian Frankish kingdom by Clovis I in 486 after the defeat of the last  Roman governor of Gaul.

But it would be equally true to note that France within more or less its current borders did not actually arise until 1558 when the English were finally expelled from the continent with the capture of Calais or even until 1860 when Savoy was incorporated into France.

The current President of France is Nicolas Sarkozy.

EDIT:The blue and red were the ancient colors of Paris, to which the Commander of the Guard, Lafayette, reputedly, added the royal white.

  3. 843 founded (french state)

    current constitution 1958.
