I am trying to date a map of Ireland, it shows Kings County, which is now County Offaly. When did the change take place? If I can find out when the name change occurred it will help me date the map.

  1. Round about 1922, though not all these renamings happened immediately after independence - Kingstown reverted to its old name of Dun Laoghaire in 1921, a year before independence.

The name comes from the kingdom of Uí Failghe, but when the county was created in 1556 by Queen Mary she named it after her husband, king Phillip II of Spain. The county town was Phillipstown, now called Daingean, but since the 19th century the county town has been Tullamore.

  2. Probably in 1921 or 1922, when the island was partitioned.

  5. between 1912-1922

  6. I think around the 1922 mark and submissivemale36 Kingstown is now Dun Laoghaire if you're interested.

  7. The other answerers are correct, It beacame Offaly in 1922 when 26 counties of Ireland became independant (the reamining six counties are Northern Ireland)

County Laois (the county under Offaly) was called Queenstown also.
