  1. Well, rock 'n' roll first gained popularity in the 1950s. Country music and blues seem to have been the original elements of rock 'n' roll. (Elvis Presley once auditioned for the Grand Ole Opry. When they turned him down, he went to the Louisiana Hayride, which for many years was a rival show to the Opry. Johnny Cash was another of the original "rockabilly" musicians on Sun Records, where Elvis got his start.) As to who invented it, I'm not sure I can peg it to one specific person. A lot of poor white musicians (including the aforementioned Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash) in the South fused country and blues and this resulted in the creation of "rockabilly", which in turn evolved into rock 'n' roll. Also, there was a heavy blues influence in early rock 'n' roll. Witness such early rock 'n' roll celebrities as Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and the recently departed Bo Diddley.
