When did Suicide in Australia become a big problem?

I'm trying to find out when Suicide became popular in Australia for my Australian studies project. Or at least, a year in which it became popular.

But, I can't find any information about it anywhere. Could you guys help me please?

There's a WA Coroners Inquiry into dozens of aboriginal suicides in the Kimberley District happening right now.

In I think 1998 it was declared a big problem and in 96. I think in 98 it was called the worst cause of loss of life for young men in remote rural areas under 21.

i beleive suicide became a problem in australia when drugs and alcohol were taken to new heights and the side effects associated with that.

also with added social pressures of the last 20 years
