  2. They were started by an Italian bloke called Gino, and the first one opened in 1985 in Colchester.

  4. The first mention of fried fish was in Charles Dickens novel, Oliver Twist, which was published in 1837. Then in the 1850s, street traders sold pieces of fried fish and cooked ‘shaved’ potatoes in newspapers on the streets and alleys of London. Joseph Malin was said to have opened the first fish and chip shop back in the 1860s and Mr John Lees opened the first fish and chip shop outside London in Mossley, near Ashton in Cheshire in 1863.

    Nowadays there are over 11,000 fish and chip shops all over the UK.  Fish and chips are now a modern phenomenon with drive-thru chippys opening up in cities all over the country and the export of our national dish across the globe.  Today, New York has four fish and chip shops, following the first one which opened humorously called ‘A Salt & Battery’.

  6. i know that the first chip shop in UK was opened in Dundee in the blackness road area of the city it originated from the Italian/Roma immigrants unsure of date though hope this helps..........guid luck.....

    Mossley near Oldham, Lancashire, around 1863. Mr Lees sold fish and chips from a wooden hut  in the market and later he transferred the business to a permanent shop across the road which had the following inscription in the window "This is the first fish and chip shop in the world." But in London, Joseph Malin opened a fish end chip shop in Cleveland Street within the sound of Bow Bells 13 in 1860..
