1810:  All the islands came under the rule of a single king for the first time, so you could view this as when Hawaii became a country.

1898:  Hawaii stopped being a country, and became a US territory.

1959:  Hawaii became a state of the US.

So, Hawaii isn't a country, and hasn't been for a long time.

"Jon" is right with his answer. In fact, Hawaii is the only State in the Union which was formerly a Kingdom. If you want to get back at your friends, ask them to spell "Kamehameha". He was the King of Hawaii.
