  1. Yup, Italy surrendered in 1943 and mostly joined the Allies in fighting against their ex-allies, the Germans.  There was also a pro-fascist state in northern Italy called the Republic of Salo which continued to fight on the Axis side.

  2. September 8 1943, Italy appointed prime minister (a General called Badoglio) signed  the surrender on orders of the king and Mussolini was arrested . .Around the world many Italian soldiers refusing to cooperate with German former allies became P.o.W and were sent to concentration camps in Germany . Some reacted against  n***s like in Navarone. Many joined the already existing Italian resistance (in big towns and on the Alps) .  Other  followed the new government in Southern Italy and fought with the allied forces.

Mussolini was shortly after freed by a German commando and escaped to north where he established, in Salo', near Verona, a puppet republic, as Canolog Y says, called RSI or Repubblica Sociale Italiana (Italian Social Republic). RSI soldiers were called "repubblichini" as a derogatory  term  by Italians. Two divisions were built under German command.

Being the king and official government escaped in the allied protected south , the resistance in the center north was led by a National Liberation Commitee (CLN) up to the self liberation of  most of the North  in 1945 (still celebrated as Liberation Day, April 25) and joined their forced with the allies coming from South on the central "Gothic Line" the last defense line of  Germans.

Mussolini was arrested while trying to escape to Switzerland in German corporal clothes and executed.

After the war Italians choose to be a Republic instead of a monarchy (the attitude of the king with Mussolini and after the surrender contributed a great deal to it) and the king went to exile in Portugal

  3. yes they did surrender in 1943.  they then became allied with england.  mussolini was captured by the italian resistance in 1945

  4. September 1943 the Italian government surrendered their armed forces to the Allies after the invasion of Sicily and Southern Italy in August

The Germans took over from the Italian forces and defended Italian territory in the north until the end of the war.

From 1943 to 45 Italy was officially on the side of the Allies.
