  1. It pretty much started before we even became a country and in some places it hasnt even ended

  2. Segregation = keeping free African-Americans and whites separate, so it began with the end of slavery during the Civil war, and ESSENTIALLY ended during the 1960s.  Martin Luther King is the person most credited for helping end segregation.

Some aspects of segregation included separate bathrooms for blacks, separate public swimming pools and beaches, separate seating areas on buses, separate schools, separate army units (which existed until the Vietnam war), and separate parts of the city to live in (ghettoes - which still exist, but the main factor of this is more poverty than racism today).  It was most prominent in the Southern states, but still existed in some Northern states - for example, in New York city, there were two YMCAs, one for blacks, one for whites.

African-Americans have not yet achieved full equality, but the main focus is equality in education, the workplace, and treatment before the law - not segregation.

  3. Since slaves were technically "segregated" I'm not too sure there's a date type answer, it was more of a process.  The Black Codes were laws passed during the abolition era from about 1830-1860.  The Jim Crow Era lasted from about 1876-1965. But don't think there wasn't segregation in the 16 years between. It was most prominent in the South and least prominent in the West.  It happened in the West too, it was just more subtle / convoluted.

  4. Wow. an important part of American History, and you want someone to just hand you the answers? Do some research, you might actually learn something.
