  1. As far as I remember, it started with European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) in 1951, which was enlarged in 1957, and concerned all produce, not only coal and steel. The Six formed a Customs Union, enabling them to trade with one another without paying duties on their joint products. The purpose of the “Common Market”, as it was called, was to prevent war, promote trade and industry, raise living standards and enhance fellowship between the member countries.

    This came to be known first as the European Economic Community (EEC), and then as the European Community (EC). The Six had become the Twelve. The rest we know - it's still growing....

    So the answer to your Q is 1957. according to my EU Handbook.
