    Actually the civil rights movement was in progress before that but it wasn't until the 1950's that they got an 'ear' from the press.

  3. I suppose you could say it began in 1954 with the Supreme Court ruling in Brown v. Board of Education. (The United States Supreme Court ruled in the Oliver Brown, et al v. the Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas that "racial segregation in public schools is unconstitutional." This decision reversed the 1896 Plessy v. Ferguson "separate but equal" decision.)
